Seven Common Skin Diseases or Conditions

When it comes to skin diseases, there are temporary and long-lasting conditions you need to be aware of.  As a dermatology pathology lab service in Dallas, TX, we help many dermatologists make educated diagnoses for their patients.   These are some of the most common types of skin diseases or conditions and their symptoms.

Moles

These are growths that are made up of skin cells that bunch up with the surrounding tissue. Most moles cause no harm and are 'common', however, you should pay attention to any color changes or growth, it may be a sign of cancer. If you spot these changes, inform your doctor right away.

Rosacea

The most common Rosacea will cause redness on the face. If you have darker skin, you may notice the area being darker and warmer than the skin that surrounds it. There isn't a known cure, but treatments do exist.

Lupus

This common skin disease is a complex autoimmune condition. Those inflicted experience pain, inflammation, red patches/rings, or other rashes that will not hurt or itch. There are several symptoms that accompany Lupus, such as fever, fatigue, headache, stiff/swollen/painful joints.  Statistically, lupus is most common in women with darker skin. There is no cure, but treatments are available.

Psoriasis

Another autoimmune disorder, symptoms include patches of itchy skin with strange appearances. The size and severity of effected area will vary. The visible symptoms of psoriasis are often harder to detect in those with darker skin. There are multiple treatments available, and a dermatologist can recommend the best one for you depending on which of the five types of psoriasis you have.

Acne

Acne is a plague of a condition. Most common in younger generations experiencing puberty, you will see symptoms such as pustules, papules, nodules, and cysts.  There are several over the counter treatments and medical treatments available for those experiencing acne.

Hives

These itchy welts are usually pinkish or reddish on lighter skin. They are caused usually due to allergic reactions, stress, illness, friction, and even tight clothing.  Hives will form in clusters, and do not always stick to one area of the body.  There are effective treatments for hives.

Warts

The contagious Human Papillomavirus (HPV) will cause warts. You will find them forming anywhere on the body, normally the same color as the skin if not a bit darker. While warts can sometimes go away on their own, it may be recommended for them to be removed.

There are so many more temporary and long-lasting conditions of the skin, and sometimes searching online doesn't help you identify symptoms you may be going through. Always get a dermatologist's opinion before treating anything you can't identify.  If you are looking for a dermatology pathology lab service in Dallas, TX, contact Kai Medical Laboratory to hear about our testing capabilities today.
